Excellent

The Chicken Coop Company did an excellent job with this product, paying attention to details that many companies overlook these days. The packaging was thoughtfully designed, making it easy to unpack. The assembly process was straightforward—I completed it alone in about an hour, though having a second person would have made it even easier. Overall, this coop is well-built and built to last, offering far better quality than anything you’d find overseas at this price.

Chicken Coop for 10 Chickens – Rhode Island Homestead Coop with Run Extension Options

This Rhode Island Homestead Hen House with Run Extension Options is eggstatic!!

So why does it say chicken coop for 10 chickens? There are factors to consider: what chicken breeds are you getting, are you able to let them free range? We recommend taking a look at the measurements and seeing what you feel comfortable with, remembering your girls are only going to be in the hen house to roost and lay their eggs.

Keep in mind the chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on the roosting rods!

  • Water Tight: Our chicken coop for 10+ chickens with a run extension has flashing above the nesting box roof lids to prevent water from running into the nesting box.
  • Easy cleaning: Has a pull-out tray to catch their waste for easy cleaning
  • Quality Construction: Heavy gauge stainless steel hardware, galvanized wire mesh, hard plastic lined under roof panels for additional moisture barrier, Ajustlock bolt latches, supporting braces between panels, Acrylic sliding window, Fold down and LOCKING window covers!
  • Thoughtful engineering: Solid construction, added supports under the nesting box, diagonal wood supports on all panels, panel reinforcement...
  • Easy Access: Doors under each nesting box for easy access to the space under the hen house. The Run has a door panel and half door on the end panel. This makes cleaning the run a cinch and helps in letting the girls out for free ranging.
  • A lot of interior space: 143.5”long x 65.5″wide x 67″tall, 7 roosting rods, 16 inches of clearance under the hen house etc.
  • Fast Delivery: We ship using FedEx from our warehouses, we use bubble wrap and foam as well as a very thick cardboard box. This Coop comes in three boxes!
  • Easy to Assemble: Each piece is labeled and pilot holes pre-drilled. The step-by-step videos on our YouTube channel are also available!

Assembly Instructional Video (Note: we have since added additional doors below each nesting box as well as to the end panel of the run)

The dimensions of this coop are:

Hen House: 65.5 inches wide x 67 inches tall x 42 inches long with three 37.5 inch roosting rods and one 36 inch roosting rod

Plenty of Interior space:

  • 41” x 65” interior floor space
  • 6 Nesting Boxes
  • 3 Lower interior roosting bars
  • 2 Raised interior roosting bars (similar coops only have 1!)
  • 16” clearance under the hen house

Run Extension Options:

We offer two run options. Our original run, which is approximately four feet high, and a walk-in run that is six feet high.

Original Run - 4ft high

39.5 inches wide x 50.5 inches tall x 101.5 inches long, has two 37.5-inch roosting rods and one 36 inch roosting rod

Walk-In Run - 6ft high

39.5 inches wide x 74 inches tall x 101.5 inches long, has two 37.5-inch roosting rods and one 36 inch roosting rod

Total Weight:  225 pounds

The original Rhode Island Homestead Chicken Coop is solid! One of the things you will notice is that our chicken run EXTENDS under each nesting box. More than providing additional space for your hens, this is CRITICAL as it gives support for the nesting box (this may seem minor, however, without the support the nesting boxes will sag after a short period of time).

In the picture below you can see the size difference between the Rhode Island Homestead XL chicken coop and the Orpington Lodge. Very similar design just different in size.

Keep in mind that you can purchase additional run extensions and additional hen houses if you would like to expand and customize your coop space!

A few additional points to consider:

  • Our chicken coop kit for 10+ chickens with a run extension has flashing above the nesting box roof lids to prevent water from running into the nesting box
  • Our carabiners and other hardware are heavy-duty stainless steel
  • Easy to clean pull out tray to catch their waste and keep things clean
  • Our amazing coop has multiple vents providing important airflow in the chicken house
  • Each panel has four additional diagonal wooden support pieces
  • Run extension/support under each nesting box (without support the nesting boxes sag and quickly fall apart
  • Acrylic sliding window rather than wood which can shrink or expand and make it difficult to open the windows/vents
  • Hard plastic liner under all roof panels for durability and weatherproofing
  • We use strong chicken wire mesh (twice as thick as most other coops) with small holes to keep predators out
  • We use heavy-duty hardware (Ajustlock bolt latches!)
  • EVERY piece is labeled, and our instructions are thorough and written by us =)
  • We sell hen houses and runs separately allowing you to customize and expand your setup
  • THICK nest box dividers (twice the thickness of most other coops)
  • Well-constructed ladder

You are sure to love the doors under each nesting box for easy access to the space under the hen house. This allows for easy cleaning and for letting the girls in and out. The run has a door panel and on the runs end panel half the panel is a door. This makes cleaning the run a cinch and helps in free ranging.

Final Suggestions:

Since they are made of wood and will be outside 24/7, we STRONGLY recommend that you stain, lacquer or paint your extra large (XL) chicken coop with a run for 10+ chickens. The stain applied is a base coat that is not designed to protect your coop long term from the elements.  Often in transit parts can get dinged or scratched etc. You may need to touch up your coop before staining or painting it!

Once set up we recommend anchoring it down, this can be as simple as a stake on each side of the hen house and run area. As much as we have tried to predator proof our coops, you know your area best and you may want to put wire around your coop, or put pavers. You'll always want to double check hardware and latches to make sure everything is tight and secure. Larger predators like bears you will want to look at installing an electric fence around the perimeter.

The four boxes shipped via FedEx ground.

Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions about our coops when people are considering a new chicken coop for their back yard. Here, we've compiled the most frequently asked questions in case you have the same wonderings.

Can I swap the run panels so the door is on the other side?

Unfortunately, no. The panels are not interchangeable due to the position of the door and access openings.

Should I stain or paint my coop, and what do you use?

Yes — since our coops are made of real wood and will be outside year-round, we strongly recommend staining, lacquering, or painting them for long-term protection. We apply two coats of a water-based stain at the factory, which provides some initial protection, but it’s only a base coat and isn’t designed to withstand full sun, rain, or snow over time. For best results, we recommend re-staining or painting your coop annually. You can purchase Chicken Coop Company stain  directly on our site and pick it up at your local Sherwin Williams — we even offer a 10% discount.

It’s normal for small dings or scratches to happen in transit; these can easily be touched up before you apply your protective coat. Once your coop is set up, we also recommend anchoring it down with simple stakes on each side of the hen house and run to keep everything secure in windy conditions.

Not your style? No problem — we use water-based stain as a base, so you can paint over it with the color of your choice. Looking for more inspiration, check out our testimonials page!

We have extreme temperatures in our area — what do we do?

For cold temperatures:

  • The coop is designed to keep the elements out while still allowing ventilation — which is the #1 most important factor in cold weather. Chickens run high body temperatures and are surprisingly resilient. In very cold climates (or below 0°F), a Chicken Coop Radiant Heater can help.We recommend radiant plates over bulbs, as they warm the chickens themselves instead of heating the air. Also be sure to use a chicken water heater so their water doesn’t freeze.

For hot temperatures:

  • Our coops have multiple vents in the hen house, which help promote airflow and keep the interior cooler. You can also spray the ground near the run to reduce heat from the sun — this helps bring your hens’ body temperature down. And on especially hot days, we like to give our girls frozen corn or a cool treat from the fridge!

Can we put wheels on this coop?

The coop is designed to be stationary, but it’s light enough to move with two people or with a detachable wheel system. If you use wheels, we recommend a style that can be placed under the coop and removed once it’s moved. Always detach the run before lifting or shifting your coop.

What hardware do you use and is it sturdy?

Our carabiners and other hardware are heavy-duty stainless steel, and each panel has four additional diagonal wooden support pieces. This coop has a hard plastic liner under all roof panels for durability and weatherproofing. Lastly we use very strong hardwire mesh, 2x stronger than most coops.

How can I make my coop more predator-proof?

Our coops are built with safety in mind, but you know your area best. We recommend reinforcing your setup with hardware cloth (preferred) or chicken wire around the base or perimeter — especially if you have raccoons or foxes. Many families also place pavers around the coop for added stability.

Check hardware and latches regularly to make sure everything stays tight. If you live in an area with larger predators like bears, installing an electric fence around the perimeter is an excellent added precaution.

Where's the best spot in my backyard to set up this hen house?

The last thing you want when you're raising chickens is a wet, muddy chicken coop or run. Place your coop in the driest area possible, ideally with a small slope so water will run off. Sunlight is great as it will help keep the ground dry, but some summer shade is ideal. Placing the coop away from your neighbors can help ensure good relations. Also, don't put it too close to your house to avoid noise and smells but it's good to have it conveniently close so you can monitor your backyard flock and collect those fresh eggs.

How long does the Coop take to put together?

Everything is easier when you tackle a project with a friend! This coop will take around 3 hours to build.

Can I attach more than one run?

Yes! The runs are designed to be able to add on. Here’s how 3 customers made it work.
