Description

The Leghorn Cottage – The Perfect Chicken Coop for 4 Chickens

Our chicken coop for 4-6 chickens is a perfect starter coop and measures: 76” long x 31.5″ wide.

Eggcellent for your small backyard flock! So why does it say 4+ chickens? There are factors to consider... what chicken breeds are you getting, are you able to let them free range? We recommend taking a look at the measurements and seeing what you feel comfortable with.

Keep in mind the chickens share nesting boxes and stand side by side on the roosting rods!

This strong, high-quality backyard chicken coop for 4+ chickens allows you to take comfort that your girls are safe from harmful predators. Providing comfort, room, and an invitation for fresh egg production, this coop serves wonderfully for your backyard chickens, ducks, quail, or pheasant.

It is made from non-splintering fir timber and is painted with a water-based primer coat. Many families have painted their coop to match their home and you certainly can!  We recommend putting a layer of lacquer, paint, or stain on it once it's set up as the wood will be settling in place you'll want to put that coating on at the beginning and whenever you feel it needs it in the future!

The hen house door slides open and closes using a metal handle (this allows you to secure your hens at night very easily). There is 15 inches of clearance under the chicken house providing additional coop space for the hens to roam.

One of the things you will notice about the original Leghorn Cottage chicken coop is that the chicken run extends under the nesting box. MANY other chicken coops that are being sold online do not have any support under their nesting boxes. Without support, the nesting boxes will start to sag within a VERY short period of time.

We also have a heavy plastic flashing that goes above the nest box roof panel. Each roof panel has a hard plastic lining to further insulate and weatherproof the coop! Our chicken coops for 4+ chickens are SOLID and well-built! But since it's a wooden chicken coop and will be outside 24/7 we again, STRONGLY recommend that you stain, lacquer or paint your coop.

The stain applied is a base coat that is not designed to protect your coop long-term from the elements.  Often in transit parts can get dinged or scratched etc. You may need to touch up your coop before staining or painting it! Once set up we recommend anchoring it down, this can be as simple as a stake on each side of the hen house and enclosed run area.

To upgrade your coop setup, consider our chicken coop heater for safe heating during the cold winter months, chicken waterer for steady hydration, and the predator-proof chicken coop kit to bolster the security of your hens.

Easy Assembly Instructions (Note since this video we have added two additional doors which makes accessing all points of the run area much easier)

Each piece is labeled and the instructions were written by us =) We are here and happy to assist in any way that we can. There are a ton of coops out there but VERY few that are thought out to the extent the Leghorn Cottage 4+ chicken coop with a run has been and even fewer that are built as well as the Leghorn Cottage is built! It will arrive in two boxes! You will need a power screw driver and an hour. We pre-drill the holes for you. In addition, all of the heavy gauge wire is preinstalled on the panels, etc. You will be pleasantly surprised by how easy it will be to assemble!

  • Top Quality Construction: heavy gauge hardware, wire mesh, flashing above nesting boxes, heavy sliding poop tray, acrylic sliding window, support under nesting boxes!
  • Well-Engineered: VERY SOLID with support under the nesting box, and diagonal wood supports on all panels.
  • A lot of space: 76” long x 31.5″wide, 2 roosting rods, 15 inches of clearance under the hen house, etc. (Note the roof makes it 34" wide)
  • Easy to Assemble: EACH piece is labeled, we write our own instructions, and we pre-drill holes!
  • 3 entrance doors to the run making easy access to the floor space under the hen house. This allows for easy cleaning and for letting the girls in and out when free-ranging.

Note the Leghorn Cottage Chicken Coop and run for 4+ chickens is not compatible with any of the chicken guard auto doors we have listed on our site.

Final Suggestions:

Since they are made of wood and will be outside 24/7, we STRONGLY recommend that you stain, lacquer, or paint your chicken coop for 4-6 chickens. The stain applied is a base coat that is not designed to protect your coop long-term from the elements. Often in transit parts can get dinged or scratched etc. You may need to touch up your coop before staining or painting it! Once set up we recommend anchoring it down, this can be as simple as a stake on each side of the hen house and run area. As much as we have tried to predator-proof our coops, you know your area best and you may want to put chicken wire around your coop, or put pavers. You'll always want to double-check hardware and latches to make sure everything is tight and secure. For larger predators like bears, you will want to look at installing an electric fence around the perimeter.

Questions & Answers

Q: Can I attach more than one Run?
A: No

Q: Can I swap the panels so the door is on the other side?
A: Unfortunately No.The panels are not interchangeable due to the position of the door and the access

Q: What kind of stain or paint do you use?
A: We put two coats of a water-based stain on your coop. This provides protection right out of the box. Like all outdoor wood structures, paint or stain will protect your coop and we recommend doing it every year. You can purchase Chicken Coop Company stain on our site and pick it up at your local Sherwin Williams. We offer a 10% discount.

Q: Can I paint my coop?
A: Yes! We use water-based stain as a base, so you can paint over it with the color of your choice. Look at our testimonials page (link) for some inspiration!

Q: How does this coop hold up in the rough weather?
A: This coop is designed to withstand wind and storms. Long-term customers are happy in 49 states (sorry hawaii). It is heavy enough and the run extending under the nesting boxes ensures a stable foundation. For added stability, ground stakes or U stakes can be used. The Predator Protection Kit we offer also serves as an effective way to stake the coop down. The #1 factor is a level surface.

Q: It’s hot in our area, what do we do?
A: Our coops have multiple vents in the hen house, this air flow helps keep your girls healthy and reduces the temperature in the hen house. You can also spray the ground with water or add a roof to the run to reduce sun exposure. This will reduce their body temperature too. Sometimes we will give our girls frozen corn or something from the fridge to cool them down =).

Q: It’s cold in our area, what do we do?
A: The coop is designed to keep the elements out while allowing ventilation, which is the #1 way to protect birds in cold weather. Chickens run a high body temp and are very resilient. Chicken Coop Heaters can help when temps are very cold or below 0. We recommend radiant heaters over bulbs. This heats the chickens, not the air, reducing the requirement for added insulation to keep the heat in. Make sure that you have a chicken water heater so your flock stays hydrated on those cold days.

Q: Can we Put wheels on this Coop?
A: The coop is designed to be stationary, but it is light enough to move with two people or use a wheel system. If you use wheels, the best option is the kind you can place under the coop and remove after moving. Simply detach the run before lifting or moving.

Why choose The Chicken Coop Company?

Note: We have since added additional doors below each nesting box as well as to the end panel of the run

A few additional points to consider:
You are sure to love the doors under each nesting box for easy access to the space under the hen house. This allows for easy cleaning and for letting the girls in and out. The run has a door panel and on the runs end panel half the panel is a door. This makes cleaning the run a cinch and helps in free ranging.
Chicken coop with a run extension has flashing above the nesting box roof lids to prevent water from running into the nesting box
Carabiners and other hardware are heavy duty stainless steel
Easy to clean pull out tray to catch their waste and keep things clean
Our amazing coop has multiple vents providing important airflow in the chicken house
Each panel has four additional diagonal wooden support pieces
We sell hen houses and runs separately allowing you to customize and expand your set up
Run extension/support under each nesting box (without support the nesting boxes sag and quickly fall apart
EVERY piece is labeled and our instructions are thorough and written by us =)
THICK nest box dividers (twice the thickness of most other coops)
Well constructed ladder
Acrylic sliding window rather than wood which can shrink or expand and make it difficult to open the windows/vents
Hard plastic liner under all roof panels for durability and weatherproofing
We use strong chicken wire mesh (twice as thick as most other coops) with small holes to keep predators out
We use heavy duty hardware (Ajustlock bolt latches!)

The original Rhode Island Homestead Chicken Coop is solid!

One of the things you will notice is that our chicken run EXTENDS under each nesting box. More than providing additional space for your hens, this is CRITICAL as it gives support for the nesting box (this may seem minor, however, without the support the nesting boxes will sag after a short period of time).

In the picture below you can see the coop size difference between the Rhode Island Homestead XL and the Orpington Lodge. Very similar design just different in size.

Keep in mind, you can purchase additional run extensions and additional hen houses if you would like to expand and customize your coop space!
